Leo Koperdraat (keys/guitars/vocals) and Ed van Haagen (bass/keys) have been making music together in the Netherlands since the 1980s.
They met Frank Urbaniak (drums/lyrics) online via the Big Big Train Facebook page in 2012, and since then they have been composing and recording their music via transatlantic data exchanges. This resulted in the band’s debut album Strange Attractors in 2013, which was produced by Rhys Marsh.
From 2013 the band started to work with multi-instrumentalist, mixer and engineer Brett Kull (Echolyn, Rise Twain and Katie Barbato). On their second album, Garden of Ghosts, the band worked together with Kull and started re-shaping their sound to move away from 80s goth influences, instead finding their own unique mix of pop, rock, indie and prog. This second album attracted a lot of positive responses and even resulted in a shortlist nomination for the Grammy Awards in the category of “Rock”! On the band’s third album, Slow Burn 1, they refined this mix, before embarking on a successful partnership with record label Bad Elephant Music with the release of Close to Vapour, which highlighted an increased pop sensibility.
The release of Beyond Borders marked another important change for the band with the addition of Gareth Cole on guitars and backing vocals. This gave the band the opportunity to start experimenting with more long-form compositions and to apply a more progressive rock approach to their songs.
